Barcelona and Sevilla shared the points in LaLiga on Tuesday, with Ronald Araujo canceling out Papu Gomez’s opening in a result that did neither team’s ambitions any favors.

Both goals were scored from corners pieces in a dramatic first half at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium as the rain began to pour.

Sevilla’s Jules Kounde got booked and sent off after the break, but despite having played for half an hour with ten men, Barcelona was still unable to score the winning goal that would have catapulted them into the top four for the first time since August.

Instead, Xavi Hernandez’s side advances to seventh place, two points behind Real Madrid for a Champions League position, while Sevilla misses out on an opportunity to close the gap on Real Madrid to three points. They are still in second place, five points back of the leaders.

Xavi in his post-game news conference said

We’ve dropped two points. We deserved to win, even when it was 11 against 11, but I’ve seen a Barcelona with character and that’s what I want. The team is growing.

So, overall, it’s a bittersweet feeling. I will struggle to sleep [because] we had to win, especially against 10.

We must be calmer when we have the extra man, but I am proud of the team despite the result, which was the worst part of the game.

Despite the rainy weather in the south of Spain, Barca got off to a strong start. Frenkie de Jong’s early header effort was denied by Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, while Ferran Jutgla skied two long shots.

Sevilla improved as the match progresses, with Rafa Mir posing a danger. Before hitting off target from 20 yards, the forward had a goal ruled out for offside.

For the home side, Gomez managed to break the deadlock in the 32nd minute. Argentina’s attacker netted wonderfully from close inside the box after a great corner attempt.

Just before halfway, Barcelona balanced the scores from a corner, with defender Araujo jumping highest to smash Ousmane Dembele’s delivery into the net.

At the beginning of the second half, Sevilla was the dominant team, with Mir and Thomas Delaney both squandering chances, but the tide switched when Kounde was sent off. In retaliation to a Jordi Alba foul, the France defender threw the ball into the Barcelona player’s face, earning him a straight red card.

As Barca sought for a winner, Gavi headed a fantastic chance over, but it was Dembele who seemed the readiest to score later on.

With a magnificent solo effort, the Frenchman struck the crossbar before setting up Luuk de Jong, who was playing against his former club, only for the Dutch striker to head straight at Bounou.

According to Espn, Araujo after the match said

We’ve taken a step forward. We played well against a difficult side in Sevilla. We deserved more because we were better in the second half. There were good spells in the first half, too, so it’s a shame we switched off a little for their goal. We’re on the right path.
