The hit song “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran has become the first song to reach three billion Spotify streams.

The 30-year-old singer disclosed the news in a video posted on Wednesday (December 22).

I just heard  ‘Shape of You’ has reached 3 billion Spotify streams, which is absolutely insane

He continued

I remember this song hitting a billion and thinking that that was weird. The first song to hit 3 billion streams and I’m really, really chuffed with it.

Thank you, Spotify, for your support over the years. We’ve had a great 10 years together and hopefully, we have a great 10 years more.”

The singer of “Bad Habits” also told a narrative of how the song came to be while denoting that the song was not initially planned to be included in the album.

“Shape Of You” Wasn’t really meant to make the album. But when I finished making the song, Ben Cook, from my label, said it had to be a single – but I wanted ‘Castle on the Hill’ to be the single. We put both songs out at once and… I was wrong.

Ed Sheeran released his fourth studio album ‘Equals‘ earlier this year, which peaked at number one on the Spotify Top 10 Album Debuts rankings both globally and in the United States.

The artist subsequently released “Merry Christmas,” a Christmas song he wrote with Elton John. Sheeran has declared that his next Mathematics tour will be his final stadium tour.

Sheeran’s Mathematics tour kicks up in Dublin in April and will take him around Europe until September.
