Explosion in Basra, Iraq kills at least four, 20 wounded

An explosion struck the center of Iraq’s southern city of Basra, killing a number of individuals.

The root of Tuesday’s explosion, which launched a column of black smoke into the sky, was not precisely identified as the explosion left people dispersed.

According to police and health agencies, at least four individuals were killed and 20 others were wounded.

Asaad al-Idani, the governor of Basra, told journalists on the incident scene that a motorcycle had exploded.

As of the time of writing this report, it is yet to be ascertained if the source of the explosion was a bomb being attached to the motorcycle or a case of a suicide bomber.

A senior security source told the Rudaw media network that the miserable incident occurred in the city center, opposite al-Jumhouri Hospital.

According to the security source,

The security forces have cordoned off the scene, to find out the type and nature of the explosion

Since the defeat of ISIS in 2017, an explosion in Basra has been a very rare occurrence.
