More than 100 Japan flights were canceled due to heavy snow

According to Japan’s two major airlines, more than 100 domestic flights were canceled on Sunday (Dec 26) owing to heavy snowfall in the country’s northern and western regions.

Due to the heavy snow in Japan, as of 1 pm (0400 GMT), ANA Holdings has suspended 77 flights, affecting approximately 5,100 travelers, according to Mr. Yutaka Kitahara, the company’s director of operations.

As of 10 a.m. (0100 GMT), Japan Airlines had canceled 35 flights, affecting 1,810 passengers, according to a spokeswoman from the airline’s operations section.

Because of the increasing prevalence of the latest Omicron coronavirus variant, passenger flights were disrupted globally over the Christmas weekend.

According to the Health Ministry, Japan has confirmed just about a dozen cases of community transmission of the new Covid-19 variant and 231 total Omicron infections, including abroad arrivals, since tightening border controls to mitigate the spread from Omicron.
