After returning to action at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, Spain’s Rafael Nadal says he cannot assure he would be in Melbourne in time for the Australian Open in January next year.

The 35-year-old earned his first competitive appearance since the Citi Open in Washington earlier this month in the exhibition event.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion had been out of action for four months due to a foot injury.

Nadal had earlier been dumped out of the Roland Garros semi-finals and had to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics, the US Open, and Wimbledon due to the injuries he sustained.

Rafael Nadal, while disclosing his uncertainty on how he can not guarantee his participation in the Australian Open, he said

The idea is to go out there and try my best in Australia…Being 100% honest, I can’t guarantee it. I need to speak with my team

Despite testing positive for COVID -19, Australian Open Chief Craig Tiley expressed the hope that Nadal will partake in January’s competition.

Nadal contracted the virus while participating in an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi last week, and has emphasized that his future tournament participation will be influenced by his recovery in the coming weeks.

It’s been more than six months since the last real official match. Things are difficult.. and i accept that.

I went through this process unfortunately a lot of times in my tennis career but i need to practice and i need to be healthy enough to go through this process. If that happens, i’m confident that i’ll be back
