In Cape Town, a massive fire has emerged in the South African parliament building.

At around 05:30 GMT on Sunday, firefighters were summoned to the building following massive flames and a big column of smoke was spotted.

Minister of Public Works Patricia de Lille told media outside Parliament that the fire was not in the National Assembly building, as the Cape Town city government had mentioned earlier, but in the Old Assembly.

According to News 24, the minister of works had earlier said

It’s not the National Assembly that’s on fire. What’s coming up there is an extractor pulling all the smoke out of the National Assembly

There was really no information as to what started the fire. 36 firefighters had first been dispatched to the location, according to News24.

Authorities later demanded additional reinforcements as they struggled to put out the fire.
