Thomas Muller of Bayern Munich declared Barcelona simply can not handle the intensity of Europe’s top-tier teams after the five-time Champions League winners were knocked out from the group stages after a shameful 3-0 loss at the Allianz Arena.

Muller grabbed the game’s first goal, then Leroy Sane and Jamal Musiala contributed to the goals to consign Barcelona to the Europa League in the new year.

The Catalan club will not be in the Champions League knockout stages for the very first time since 2003-04.

While talking to Uefa.com, Thomas Muller said

We really tried to get the intensity into the game because I think we’re really massively different to Barcelona, at least in their current state, because of that intensity.

The Bayern player further buttressed the point that Barcelona can definitely not be written off technically and the quality of players

I don’t think they can cope with that intensity.

Technically they have it all and they have some really good players, there’s no question about that, but we can deliver this intensity both in possession and out of possession.

I don’t think they can cope with the intensity in top-level football.

When Barca ended up winning their fourth Champions League trophy in nine years in 2015, they defeated Bayern in the semifinal, but since then, a significant drop has set in, largely driven by the financial crisis.

Bayern, on the other hand, has become a massive threat to Barcelona, having defeated them 8-2 in the quarterfinals in 2020 and 3-0 in both group stage matches this season.
