When the World Boxing Association approved the unification of three titles involving Yordenis Ugas (WBA) and Errol Spence (IBF), what appeared to be an impossibility became a possibility (IBF, WBC).

Spence was scheduled to fight Manny Pacquiao in the summer of 2021, but the fight was canceled when the unified champion detected an eye injury that necessitated surgical intervention.

Ugas decided to be a late substitute and astonished many spectators by outfighting the eight-division belt-holder over the course of twelve rounds to gain a resounding decision victory against him.

Pacquiao would eventually proclaim his retirement from boxing, and Ugas would go on to claim the fight as the biggest victory of his career.

Having accomplished this, Ugas is determined to make much more history by defeating one of the deadliest pound-for-pound boxers in the sport, Errol spence.

According to current plans, the competition will take place during the first quarter of 2022.

Ugas while speaking with George Ebro in regards to the upcoming fight, said

I am happy that we will have a great fight, the fight that I wanted, a fight that as I have always said will be historic for Cuban boxing.

I’m happy to fight one of the best pound-for-pound. So I feel blessed and excited about this challenge.

One hundred percent [I can win this fight]. The fight that is not won is the one that is not fought.

It’s going to be a tough, strong fight, but my mindset is just that, looking for the toughest fights and giving everything of myself.

It’s going to be very tough, but I’m already preparing for that.

And Ugas is well aware that he is universally seen as a significant underdog by the majority of the public ahead of the fight against Errol Spence.

As a consequence of the eye damage and a catastrophic car crash in late 2019, Spence has not been as active as he would have wanted during the past few years.

According to boxingscene, Ugas continued

There are fighters who seem easy or people believe they have no chance of winning, but I think I’ve gained a lot of respect since the Pacquiao fight and that is going to help me a lot with the [opinions of] people. We’ll see [what he has].

He is a great fighter regardless. For my part, I’m going to prepare myself for the best version of Spence. I don’t want anything to surprise me.
